What is Shades

Update

Since these pages are now linked to many diverse sites, many of you who visit may not have a single idea where you are! Well, welcome to my web site! Me being Andrew Barnabas, video game musician for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Currently this site is pretty much devoted to my 1st CD 'Shades', however after many requests, I am updating the site to be a general site about what I am doing now, and what I have done in the past. Therefore I intend on updating this site more regularly to include what games I am working on at the moment, as well as CD projects etc. etc. So far I've updated the contacts & links page to include information about other companies who stock Shades and a site where I've been interviewed, and the Beastwars & Frogger pages.

I've been asked to add a page for my modules, probably what I'm best known for I'm told. Modules being Amiga Modules, a computer only format which set a new standard for sample sequencing on non-CD platforms, and my first love! I intend on putting all my game and demo music (from SWIV, Double Dragon, Pinball Dreams, Cool Spot, Global Gladiators, Aladdin etc. etc.) here when we have added a new HD to the server. Those of you who have been here before will note that I have taken heed of your comments, and now added music in .mp3 format from the new games I'm working on, ditching AIFF & Real Audio. If you have any more ideas, please let me know, and thank you all for your kind emails from as far as Australia & Argentina.

I also want to add a reviews page, so if you have any comments about Shades, please feel free to mail them to me! I've got around 10 reviews to post up at the moment, but want to wait for more!!

Our first repress of Shades is complete, so order away!!! As I said a month ago, I'd sold out of our 1st run, well TRSI records has just repressed another 1000.

If you have trouble in playing any of the .mp3 format files, please note that I have added links from the Beastwars & Frogger pages to .mp3 players for PC & Mac.

In fact, I've just located a codec that will allow normal windows 95 users to play mp3 files as if they were wav files without having to load any extra programs!!! I've added that to the download pages.

Well that's it for now. A lot has happened in the 7 months since Shades was released most importantly Millennium being bought out by Sony in July, however this is all good news and I hope it allows me to release more CD's!!!!

Shades is the debut release from video game  musician Andrew Barnabas. It's more a collection of works rather than an album with a single concept.

The music ranges from funk to synth to soul to jazz. Over the last 4 years I have seen many video game musicians release CD's, most of which have contained synth music. I have always wanted to release a CD which embraces synth music and incorporates other styles too! I have never had the resources available to allow me to do the job justice, that is until I came to Millennium Interactive Ltd, the games developers based in Cambridge, UK.

*UPDATE* Millennium Interactive was bought by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in July 1997.

There are 11 tunes in total. They are split into 2 sections, encompassing my 2 loves in music, Synth music & 70's Acid Jazz / Funk.

4 are 'remixes' of computer game music, 3 composed at Millennium Interactive and 1 as a freelance musician :- A 10 minute montage of the music from 'Creatures' (PC) (not including the juke box!) Medley's of the music from 'Defcon V' & 'Silverload' (PSX), and a CD version of 'Water II', the title music from Double Dragon III (Amiga) for which the original won an award in 1992.

4 are tunes aspiring to my 2nd love, Acid Jazz / Funk. These are tunes I recorded whilst I was studying Popular Music at Leeds University. I recorded an entire album for my final year project, and decided to take the 4 finest moments from that 'prototype' and release them. I am sure that the 25 or so people who got involved with the album will be happy to see it published!

The final 2 are new tunes I have written whilst at Millennium, and are experiments in fusion. The first is a fusion of Soul (Sade, D'Angelo) and elements of contemporary Jazz (David Sanborn, Spyro Gyra). The other is a combination of ambient, dub & trance (Future Sound of London, Orbital & Aphex Twin).

The CD will be released on March 26th at The Gathering '97 in Norway by TRSI recordz.
